Beyt Dwarka is a small island off the western coast of Gujarat. Until recently, the island was accessed only through ferries. Now a monumental bridge connects it to the mainland and along with this bridge has come in a fresh flow of capital to develope an economy centred around religious tourism. The new proposal to develope a temple precint is displacing almost a hundred shopkeepers, who have been selling the neccessary ritual items for generations. This new complex by the temple trust, on a land just outside the new precint will house these shopkeepers on the ground fl oor, while creating additional real estate on the fl oor above for leasing out to offices. An arrangement that not only covers the construction cost of the complex, but also provides the shopkeepers with much better infrastructure than before.
